The picdrop story

Born out of frustration in 2012, professional photographer Andreas Chudowski sought to solve the problem of sharing large files with his clients. Encountering issues with FTP servers, oversized email attachments, lost sticks and hard drives, and unprofessional-looking Google Drive and Dropbox links, Andreas turned to a developer to code a simple, effective online tool just for himself. This tool—a game-changer for Andreas—allowed him to simply upload his work, generate preview thumbnails, and provide a ZIP download link without file size restrictions.

It was a hit.

Clients adored the swift, seamless previews and easy downloads of their photos, and fellow photographers were green with envy.

Teaming with one of his friends, Tobias Friese, a UI/UX designer and developer, they decided to develop this first idea much further and share it with other photographers. picdrop, a drag-and-drop browser tool that creates beautiful galleries and enables clients to make easy photo selections, was born.

Released to the public from their shared flats in June 2014, picdrop was an immediate success, finding thousands of happy users on day 1. So, Andreas and Tobias quickly addressed the next issue: feedback. Clients had unusual ways of providing feedback, like sending screenshots of favorite shots or sending lists of file names. Andreas and Tobias aimed to create a feedback tool that required no learning curve, no login, and no signup, acknowledging that clients are often busy. And it was a hit - again!

Now, picdrop has grown from a side project to a software with over 180,000 users and a team of 20+. Every day, its developers, designers, photographers, and user support work on improving picdrop even further. The aim remains the same: to create the easiest-to-use image-sharing tool for professional photographers, videographers, and small teams. With no funding from investors and a hidden agenda, transparency, a focus on photographers, product and user obsession, and a willingness to learn from mistakes guide the team's philosophy.
